At What Height Should You Install a Gas Detector?

The answer depends on the weight of the gas, according to experts at Macurco Gas Detection.

Different gases have different weights, so the optimal gas detector height would depend on the specific gas you’re trying to monitor.

Ideal Heights for Different Gases:

The ideal height should be determined by the gas’s density compared to air.

For example, for gases with similar densities to air, such as carbon monoxide, it is recommended that sensors are positioned between 4 and 6 feet from the floor, in the typical breathing height for most people. This is considered the best location, as these gases tend to mix with the surrounding air, according to Macurco Gas Detection.

When monitoring gases that are lighter than air, sensors should be placed near the top of the room or on high surfaces, as these gases rise. Detectors for heavier gases should ideally be installed at 6 to 12 inches above the ground, as these gases settle near the ground.

Things to Keep in Mind When Installing:

Experts recommend that you avoid installing gas detectors and sensors near ventilation fans, air diffusers, ceiling fans, or any spaces that lead to the outside. It’s important to make sure there’s enough air circulation around the device for accurate readings. Installing detectors in a location with poor airflow can impact performance and lead to inaccurate readings.
