National Fire Prevention Week: Charge Into Fire Safety
October 4 -10 is Fire Prevention Week, an annual reminder that small fire-safety habits can make a big difference at home. This year, the focus is on something most of us do every day: charging our devices. The 2026 theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower.”
A Brief But Powerful History
Fire Prevention Week is observed around October 9 each year in recognition of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which began on October 8 and caused most of its devastating destruction the following day. In 1925, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) proclaimed the first national Fire Prevention Week to raise public awareness of fire safety initiatives and help prevent tragic accidents.
More than a century later, the risks we face continue to change - and so do the ways we can help prevent fires.
Safe Charging Starts With Everyday Habits
This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is safe charging. Phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, electric scooters, tablets and countless other products in our homes rely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. When batteries are damaged, improperly charged or allowed to overheat, they can become a fire hazard.
A few simple habits can help reduce the risk:
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface - not on beds, pillows or couches where heat can become trapped.
- Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
- Pay attention to warning signs. Stop using a battery or device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells strange, smokes or makes popping or hissing sounds.
- Look for products certified by a recognized testing organization, such as CSA, ULC or ETL.
- When possible, charge larger batteries such as e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside.
Fire prevention doesn’t have to be complicated. Being mindful of where, how and what you charge is one more way to help protect the people and places that matter to you.
How Aartech Can Help
Safe charging habits are one part of fire safety. Fire Prevention Week is also a good opportunity to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, review your escape plan, and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.
At Aartech Canada, we offer smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and detectors for a variety of applications, along with specialized options such as flame and smoking/vape detection.
Whether you’re choosing an alarm for your home, looking at safety in your workplace or helping a customer, our team can help you explore the available product options.
Different detectors serve different purposes. Specialized detection may help address additional concerns, but it does not replace required smoke alarms or other life-safety systems.
