A ZWave smoke detector or ZWave carbon monoxide detector can be used with a Zwave hub or automation system to send email or text alerts in case smoke or CO is detected. The hub may also trigger additional actions such as turning off heating & air conditioning so the fan stops running, or turning on lights to help occupants get out safely.
Note: As of the time of this writing, there are no ZWave smoke detectors certified for legal installation in Canada. They are available in the USA but cannot be used here. However the ZWave firefighter module simply installs next to the existing smoke or co detector, listening for the temporal pattern of the smoke/co alarm. This is a much simpler, legal installation.
It is important to understand that in Canada, building codes typically require a Canadian UL listed smoke detector and/or CO detector to be hard wired in a specific way. So typically a ZWave smoke or CO detector is an added sensor to complement what is already in the home and should not be used as a life saving device.
