Guide to Leviton EV Chargers

In today's ever-evolving world, the need to stay future-proof is becoming more and more critical. As time passes, we're seeing more hybrid and fully electric vehicles hitting the roads, and more and more affordable models are rolling out every day. The electric vehicle trend has been growing and evolving over many years, becoming more accessible to the average consumer; now, we're finally seeing a larger saturation of them on the streets, and with that comes the massive demand for convenient EV charging options - the perfect business opportunity for you.

About EV chargers

Electric Vehicles have been around for a long time, but they were quite inaccessible, not only due to cost, but also for the lack of infrastructure. Thanks to recent advances and forward-thinking, electric vehicles are much more common, and the charging infrastructure they require is becoming more of a must-have.

With that in mind, there are a few things to know about EV chargers before you dive in. Learn more about Electric Vehicle Chargers.

It's important to note that there are different levels for EV chargers:

Level 1 charging stations use a J1772 connector and a 120V plug, making them a flexible option to be installed just about anywhere. However, they have a slower charge time - about 5 miles of range per hour of charging.

Level 2 charging stations are currently the most common type in North America. They use a J1772 connector and are rated for 240 volts. They offer a much faster charge at 25 miles of range per 1 hour of charging.

DC, also known as Level 3 charging stations, use direct current for fast charging. They use CCS connectors, or J1772 combos, and CHAdeMO connectors. Level 3s are rated for 208/480 volts and provide a quicker charge than level 2, offering 200-400+ miles of range per 1 hour of charging.

What's the difference between AC and DC charging?

AC charging is when the AC power is put into the vehicle from a charger, and the vehicle converter converts it to DC.

With DC charging, the station features a built-in convert and converts AC to DC and then the vehicle receives DC power from the charger, allowing for faster charging.

How long will it take to charge a vehicle?

Level AC or DC Miles of Range Per 1 Hour of Charging  Connector Type
Level 1 AC 5 J1772
Level 2 AC 25 J1772
DC (Level 3) DC 200-400+ CCS1, CHAdeMO

How will EV charging impact my electricity bill?

For a rough estimate of the cost of charging at home, Leviton suggests multiplying your vehicle's kWh/100 miles figure by the electric rate for the time of day you'll most often be charging. That figure will tell the cost per 100 miles.

RFID Capability

Leviton EV chargers offer the ability to enable Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) with the touch of a card, so EV charger owners can conveniently pick and choose who can use the station, reducing unwanted usage of the charger. Stations come with this feature disabled by default, but it can easily be activated as needed.
