What's Going on with Hikvision?

You may have heard that Hikvison Canada is being pulled out of Canada. Here's what happened:

In July 2025, the Canadian Government ordered Hikvision to stop doing business in Canada following a national security review.

What does this mean?

  • Going forward, Government agencies can’t buy or use Hikvision gear.
  • Hikvision will be available in Canada while supplies last.
  • Some companies may still import Hikvision products into Canada, but with what support?
  • This announcement is public knowledge. Customers will know - show them you are the expert and ahead of these issues.

Bottom line:

Hikvision’s future in Canada is winding down. If you’re using their products or planning new installs, now is the time to look at NDAA-compliant alternatives that won’t leave you or your customers exposed to uncertainty in the future.

What Is NDAA Compliance and Why Does It Matter?

A device being NDAA-compliant means that it adheres to the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA), a series of American federal laws specifying the annual budget and expenditures of the U.S. Department of Defence.

Specifically, the NDAA (section 889) bans the use of certain devices, such as cameras or drones, by the U.S. government, contractors, and other related entities from companies with certain security risks, primarily those associated with certain Chinese manufacturers, including Hikvision, Dahua, and Huawei.

NDAA compliance ensures that these products are not made by, or contain components from, these banned companies, reducing the threat of potential data security and national security crises.

I'm in Canada - Why do I Need to Care About an American Security Law?

Canada does not have its own NDAA-equivalent law; however, the awareness around the NDAA legislation, the desire for secure and reliable equipment, and potential security threats have led many Canadian agencies, including those handling sensitive information, to voluntarily adopt the NDAA outline as policy to align with global safety trends.

Your customers might be obligated to follow these policies or prefer to stay away from brands deemed unsafe by the NDAA.
